The patient was successfully treated before the use of Ecmo Machine (ECMO) at AIIMS Bhopal. The life of a 32-year-old female patient with severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) was successfully saved using Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine at AIIMS Bhopal. AIIMS Bhopal is the first government hospital in the region to have ECMO machine. ECMO is a life-saving technology that mimics the functions of the lungs and heart. The ECMO machine is similar to the heart-lung by-pass machine used in open-heart surgery. It pumps and oxygenates the patient’s blood out of the body, thereby relaxing the heart and lungs.

A 32-year-old female patient had come to AIIMS Bhopal on March 27, 2023 with complaints of cough and shortness of breath. where he was admitted. The patient’s oxygen level was at 42 percent. After examining the patient, he is suffering from ARDS, a serious lung disease. Probably due to viral fever, the patient’s lungs were badly damaged, due to which he was not able to give sufficient amount of oxygen to the body. In such a situation, the patient was immediately admitted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU). Seeing the condition of the patient here, he was first kept on ventilator and later on Ecmo machine for about two weeks. After being admitted in ICU for about 42 days, now the patient is completely healthy.

This is the reason why the use of this machine is very expensive. In private hospitals, the cost of this machine can be up to Rs 2 to 2.5 lakh per day. Although the patient was treated free of cost in AIIMS Bhopal.
