Ruud, the fourth seed, who played his third Grand Slam final after Roland Garros and the US Open, started the match well and broke his opponent’s serve early.
But third seed Djokovic rallied to win the tiebreak before clinching the second set, securing his grip during key moments in the final set.
The 36-year-old sealed the title when Rudd sent a forehand wide on his second chance to win the match.
