Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan affirmed that full recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a prerequisite for returning to negotiations on the island of Cyprus.
This came in a press conference held by Erdogan, today, Monday, with the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Arsene Tatar, in the capital, Lefkosa, on an official visit to it, after winning the presidential elections that took place last month.
Erdogan said in this context: The only way to return to the negotiating table is to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
In this context, the Turkish president indicated that nearly half a century has been wasted due to exaggerated and incompatible approaches from the Roman side (in Cyprus), and no one is willing to waste another 50 years.
And Erdogan added, “Our road map is clear. It is based on peace. We want the Aegean Sea to convey a message of peace to the world.”
He stressed that Turkey will remain with the Turkish Cypriots with all its strength, noting that “Turkish Cypriots will be able to benefit from health services in Turkey on an equal basis with Turkish citizens.”
Earlier today, Erdogan arrived in Turkish “Northern Cyprus” on his first foreign visit since his re-election as president on May 28.
Erdogan held a closed meeting with President Tatar in Lefkosa, and Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Onal Ostel and Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alp Arslan Bayraktar joined the meeting later.
President Erdogan is accompanied – on his visit to Turkish Cyprus – by a number of officials, including Foreign Ministers Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Energy and Natural Resources Bayraktar, Head of the Intelligence Service Ibrahim Kalin, and Head of the Presidential Communications Department Fakhruddin Altun.
