The British Financial Times editorial said that the readmission of Syria to the Arab League sends a chilling message to the victims of the Syrian regime.
The newspaper added that when Bashar al-Assad sits on his chair at the Arab summit, it will be a sad day for Arab diplomacy, and sends a message to the victims of the regime’s atrocities that Bashar al-Assad can continue with impunity.
The editorial saw that Al-Assad received a reward without making concessions preceded by it to alleviate the suffering of the Syrians, describing the Arab League as “a body that is largely toothless.”
The Financial Times confirmed that the decision to re-admit Syria to the Arab League gives an unnecessary and unjustified diplomatic victory to “a war criminal and his accomplices in crime”; Iran and Russia.
Meanwhile, the US State Department reaffirmed that Washington will not normalize relations with the Assad regime, and stressed that the United States does not support others to do so.
The US State Department indicated that it does not believe that Syria deserves to return to the Arab League, and made it clear that Washington had raised this point with its regional partners.
On Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad participated in the preparatory meeting for the Arab summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to be held next Friday.
Al-Assad is scheduled to participate Friday in the Arab summit that will be held in Jeddah, for the first time since 2010, after diplomatic efforts that led to the return of Damascus to its Arab surroundings after isolation that lasted for more than 11 years.
