The joint 6 + 6 committee in charge of the High Council of State in Libya and the House of Representatives announced that it has achieved complete agreement regarding the points related to the election of the President of Libya and members of parliament.
The committee stated during the press conference, at the conclusion of the second day of its consultations in the Moroccan city of Bouznika, that the organization of the presidential and legislative elections will be according to simultaneous procedures, and that the next legislative authority, i.e. the National Assembly, will be composed of two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The committee also commended the progress made in defining and distributing seats in the House of Representatives and Senate according to constituencies.
The committee affirmed its keenness to complete the various draft electoral laws during this meeting in Bouznika, in order to reach a comprehensive consensual legislative framework in consultation with the judicial bodies and the United Nations Mission.
On May 16, the Libyan House of Representatives in Tobruk voted by majority in favor of stopping Fathi Bashagha from heading the government appointed by the parliament that he was assigned in March 2022, and referring him for investigation, during a session in the city of Benghazi (east), instead of the city. Tobruk (East), where he used to hold his sessions.
In February 2022, the House of Representatives assigned Bashagha to form a new government after dismissing the national unity government headed by Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba, who rejected the decision, and was supported by the majority of the members of the Supreme Council of the State (consultative representative), which led to the division of the executive authority again in Libya. .
